Not for themselves but on behalf of the Salvation Army and the food banks they service.
Tomorrow at the Plex in Port Elgin, the Winterhawks players and others will be collecting non-perishable food from the fans just before their game with Shelburne.
Winterhawks Director of Publicity John Peevers says the club is confident the fans will step up to the plate and bring one or two items of food the night of the game.
Peevers says they’re averaging about 500 fans a game and if each one brought one or two items for the food bank, it would go a long way to filling those empty shelves at the food banks.
He says any time of year is a tough time to be without food but it stands out more at Christmas time.
Peevers says this Friday’s game is going to be a good one with first place Shelburne visiting the fourth place Winterhawks.
He says the team hopes to win on the ice and to win off the ice with their annual food drive for those less fortunate.
