More than seven thousand residents in Grey Bruce received a free flu shot from the Grey Bruce Health Unit.
That is just the total from the 15 community walk in clinics held across Bruce and Grey Counties — and it’s an increase of 600 over last year.
But the number is well over eight thousand when you factor in people who received a flu shot from their doctor, from the VON or at work.
Manager of Vaccine Preventable Diseases Karen Sweiger says the numbers are great because they try to achieve the highest level of protection.
Sweiger says it seems people are getting the message because they had new people get a flu shot this year after doubting its effectiveness in the past.
She notes the flu shot protects the most vulnerable — including young children and seniors.
In fact, it’s young children who will most likely spread the disease.
Sweiger tells Bayshore Broadcasting News there have not been any confirmed influenza cases in Grey Bruce.
It’s still not too late to get a flu shot from the Grey Bruce Health Unit.
You can make an appointment to visit the public health offices in Owen Sound and Walkerton and at the Plex in Port Elgin.
