“Sometimes the government listens.”
That is the reaction from Bruce Grey Owen Sound MPP Bill Murdoch after the province withdrew its plan to restrict teen G-2 drivers to one teenage passenger.
The Independent MPP credits Transportation Minister Jim Bradley for listening to the concerns of rural and northern Ontario.
Murdoch says he understands a number of local crashes have claimed the lives of teenagers but he feels the plan did not work.
Murdoch notes the only ride some teenagers in Grey Bruce can get — whether it’s to school or work — is when another teen drives.
Murdoch says his office received a tonne of letters from residents — mainly young people — who were opposed to the plan.
The local MPP hopes the province looks at other changes in the bill — including automatic licence suspensions for speeding.
Murdoch says that law doesn’t exist for older drivers so it discriminates against younger people.
Murdoch feels the Liberals should hold meetings around the province to get feedback on their plan.
Murdoch hopes a meeting will be held in his riding — or at least nearby.
