A Saugeen Shores Councillor doesn’t like the idea of a three percent raise for members of council.
The proposal is included in a plan to give a three percent increase to all of the town’s non-unionized employees.
Luke Charbonneau says the money councillors get for serving is only meant to cover the income they’re losing because of time away from their regular jobs.
He says in an economic downturn, council has the responsibility to keep spending and taxes low.
Charbonneau says three percent is a small amount of money, but it would be better off in taxpayer’s hands being spent to stimulate the local economy.
Charbonneau says he’d like to set the tone of curbing spending and taxes.
If given final approval by council, the pay increase would take effect on January 1st.
Non-unionized staff in Saugeen Shores include firefighters, and medical building staff.
