Statistics Canada is out with the latest census data on farm populations in Grey Bruce, Ontario and Canada and it shows farm populations have fallen to historic lows.
Statistics Canada says one in 46 Canadians lived on a farm in 2006 compared to one in three Canadians in 1931.
Census data suggests the farm population is also aging with more than 11 per cent of people living on Canadian farms in 2006 were over 65.
Stats Can Official Stephen Danford says the 2006 Census shows fewer immigrants are taking to rural ways with only 7 per cent of them involved in agriculture.
He says about one third of the 47 thousand immigrant farmers are located in Ontario.
Danford says more and more farmers are working off the farm these days with almost 50 per cent listing their main occupation as non agriculture up from 40 per cent in 2001.
