The collapse of the recycling market the focus of a special meeting later today between Owen Sound and Miller Waste systems.
The Chair of Owen Sound’s Waste Management Committee Bill Twaddle says the city is taking a big hit as a result of rock bottom prices now being offered for recyclable material.
He says last month recycling revenue was down almost 50 per cent and with no recovery in prices in sight in the immediate future, this could have a negative impact on next years budget.
The city usually receives about 300 thousand dollars a year from recycling revenue.
Twaddle says this meeting with Miller Waste should help the city understand the long term implications of the collapse of the recycling market.
He says they will be discussing various options with Miller including stockpiling recycling material until the market and prices improve.
Twaddle says any loss of revenue will be up for discussion at pre budget talks which begin a week today.
In addition he says the Waste management committee will be meeting Tuesday and they too will be talking about the collapse of the market for recyclables.
