A power outage planned for all of Port Elgin this Sunday is not sitting well with Saugeen Shores council.
The 6:30am to 11:00am outage has been scheduled so Hydro One can do maintenance on lines that feed the community.
The lights will be out for all Westario Power customers in Port Elgin.
The outage is taking place at the same time as the Silver Stick hockey tournament at The Plex.
It will run on backup power during the outage.
Local motels and restaurants tournament goers will be using will also be without electricity.
Mayor Mike Smith says Hydro One isn’t going to change their plans.
He says they have to replacing aging poles that are becoming a safety hazard.
Smith is disappointed the town didn’t get more notice and be given the chance to suggest when a better time for the outage would be.
Councillor Fred Schildroth says Hydro One should have had the outage on a weekend with the least impact, and that isn’t a weekend when 12 hundred people are in town needing places to stay and eat at.
Schildroth says the outage should have been postponed to Sunday afternoon so visitors could at least easily get breakfast before heading to the arena.
The town, and the chamber of commerce are going to send a letter to Hydro One stating their concerns.
