President of the Lake Huron Fishing Club Ray Walser confirms with Bayshore Broadcasting News, Todd Devries (de-vrees) of Southampton has accepted the position of Chairperson of the Fishing Derby.
He was taking this week to consider the position.
Walser says they’ve also filled the roles of treasurer and ticket taker.
Walser does expect there to be some changes to the way the derby is run.
He says Devries will take the next few months to see what will make things more efficient and effective; that could mean a fewer number of weigh stations.
It has been suggested in the past, it is hard to find enough people to man each station along the Lake Huron Shoreline.
Walser says interestingly enough, the volunteers that have come forward to keep the derby alive, are newer residents to the community; most having only been here for three years.
Last week, we reported, if there were not enough people to put together a derby, including a chairperson, the derby would not have run in 2009.
This summer, the 25th anniversary of the popular fishing derby was held; the top trout and salmon anglers receive pretty hefty prizes each year.
