In the past, it was a religious ceremony or a civil ceremony thru a Justice of the Peace but that has changed.
South Bruce Peninsula Clerk Rhonda Cook says the town decided to allow marriage commissioners to be licenced to meet a growing demand in the area.
Now, 7 people are qualified in the Wiarton area to perform a civil marriage.
Cook says it gives residents a choice of who can perform the ceremony which may be in a back yard or down by the water.
There are 3 staff members at the town office who are licenced and 4 area residents.
Pictures and information about the commissioners are posted on the town of South Bruce peninsula web site.
A marriage licence costs 125 dollars and a civil marriage solemnization is 350 dollars.
