The goal is to have 50 percent of municipal purchases be Canadian content.
Len Hope of the Grey Bruce Labour Council says the policy would strengthen the local economy in tough times.
Hope says farmers want area residents to buy more locally-produced food, and those products should be processed here too.
Hope says when it comes to municipal road work, Bruce County has everything it needs to get the job done.
He says materials shouldn’t have to come from other parts of Ontario or the United States for building new roads or municipal buildings.
Councillor Doug Freiburger wants more details on the type of policy the labour council wants.
He fully supports buying products made in Canada but is concered labour unions will use the policy as a way of getting support in the future.
Freiburger says Canadian jobs could be disappearing because unions demands are driving up the cost of products made here.
He’d like to see unions make some concessions to help keep the cost of Canadian goods low.
