The ribbon, made of yellow flowers was donated by local resident Ken MacDonald.
MacDonald is talking with the military about having the big yellow ribbon sent to Afghanistan as a reminder to the troops that people back home are thinking of them.
It could stand by the cenotaph at the Kandahar base or it could be displayed at the Tim Horton’s located there.
MacDonald says Tim Horton’s would be a popular spot because many soldiers say they feel closest to being in Canada when they go there.
He says we need to remember the men and women in Afghanistan who are defending our way of life and improving conditions for people in that country.
MacDonald says free speech is curtailed in many countries and the people in Canada’s armed forces “are putting their lives on the line” to defend it.
MacDonald has two nephews serving in the military.
One of them recently returned to Canada after being injured in Afghanistan.
The big yellow ribbon was on display in front of the Port Elgin cenotaph for the community’s Remembrance Day ceremonies earlier this week.
