Some tough decisions may have to be made regarding the future of retired Saugeen Shores police services dog Titan.
The animal suffered a serious leg break while exercising last spring and recovery has not been as good as one would expect.
Police Chief Dan Rivett says the incision has remained open and will not heal and Titan has been in discomfort for seven months.
Unfortunately, the wound is getting larger as well and there is a thought that Titan’s body is rejecting the steel and hardware in the leg.
This past week Chief Rivett informed the police services board that the dog would be put down to end the suffering and indeed was taken to the Southampton Pet Hospital for that procedure.
However veterinarian Dr. Jeff Berry suggested they take the invasive material out of the dog and see if that improves the situation.
Rivett says the charge for the surgery would be the same charge for putting the dog down.
The police chief has reversed his decision to put down the dog on the advice of Dr. Berry.
Rivett says there’s no guarantee the operation will work but they’ll know in a couple of weeks when the cast comes off.
