Council decided on an alternative to their original plan.
It would have seen the landfill last for another nine to 10 years.
The plan makes the most use of the 30 acres the province allowed the former Kincardine Township to use for the landfill back in 1971.
It will add over 340 thousand cubic metres of space.
The alternative is possible by changing how excavation work is done at the landfill.
Project Manager Greg Ferraro of Conestoga Rovers and Associates says the original option was only based on the needs of Kincardine Township, and not the amalgamated municipality.
The engineering work will cost 193 thousand dollars
Councillor Ron Hewitt is pleased the capacity of the landfill site can be increased at a fairly low cost to ratepayers.
He says approving the alternative option is a “no brainer” when it means keeping the Ward Two landfill site going for up to another 30 years instead of ten.
