The United Way of Bruce Grey is launching a new fundraising initiative this holiday season by collecting warm socks.
Fundraising Champion Kristy Andre says the Warm Sock Collection will be held during the annual Santa Claus parades across the region.
She says socks are the most requested items through their outreach markets, which are distributed to people facing homelessness or those in need.
“We go through around 100 a week and we have gone through 5,000 this year,” says Andre. “We thought if we are going to be in these parades, which we love to be a part of, why not add a little extra giving spirit to this and when people are going out to get their non-perishable food items for the food banks, if they could grab a pair of socks to donate as well because those are very needed and not a lot of people know how needed they are.”
Socks can be donated during the parades in:
-Owen Sound on Nov. 15
-Markdale on Nov. 28
-Kincardine on Nov. 29
-Port Elgin on Nov. 29
-Southampton on Dec. 5
-Meaford on Dec. 6
If you are unable to donate socks during the parade, you can visit the United Way in Owen Sound at 380 9th Street East.
“A warm pair of socks might not seem like much, but to someone out in the cold, it’s huge,” says Andre.
