The Town of South Bruce Peninsula will be flying its flag today which has been to Afghanistan and back.
The Wiarton Legion had the Canadian Maple Leaf flag, the Ontario Ensign flag and the Town of South Bruce Peninsula flag sent to an air base outside of Kandahar City and flown for two days.
Public Relations Officer of the Legion, Dean Weir says the air base holds around 16, 000 troops from Canada, US, Holland and Spain.
Weir says they wanted to show their support because it brings generations of veterans together.
He says we haven’t lost troops under an act of service in a long time and now all veterans are laying remembered, recognized and honoured under one flag.
He says the Canadian Maple Leaf flag will fly at every poppy campaign at the Wiarton cenotaph.
Mayor Gwen Gilbert says after she received a picture of their flag being displayed with the Kandahar soldiers, it brought tears to her eyes.
Gilbert says she is very proud of what the Legion and community has done for the troops.
Weir says he is very pleased with the support from the Department of National Defence, Larry Miller’s office, Bill Murdoch’s office and the Town of South Bruce Peninsula.
