Bruce County wants support from Saugeen Shores for new affordable housing units in Port Elgin.
70 percent of the affordable housing applications in Bruce County come from Saugeen Shores.
Councillor Victoria Serda says refurbishing work underway at Bruce Power is bringing more people into the community and causing a shortage of places to live for lower wage earners.
The county wants Saugeen Shores to provide one of two parcels of land on Wellington Street in Port Elgin for the new units.
One is located near Tomlinson Drive and The Plex, the other is near the intersection with Market Street.
Costs will be covered partly by selling eight single family homes the county currently uses for affordable housing.
Housing and Social Services Director Terry Sanderson says getting the project underway will depend on how fast the sale can be approved.
The new units will offer rent geared to the income of people living in them.
Sanderson is hoping there is no negative response from the community to an affordable housing development.
He says lower income people have a right to an affordable place to live.
Serda says she knows people in Saugeen shores who have to choose between paying their rent or their food and drugs.
