Owen Sound has joined 140 other municipalities in passing its pesticide bylaw.
The bylaw banning the residential use of pesticides will not be enforced until next spring when the growing season starts.
Councillor Bill Twaddle says the pesticide bylaw review committee wanted time to educate residents about the ban.
On June 18th 2008, lawmakers in Ontario passed the Cosmetic Pesticide Ban Act, which prohibits the sale and use of pesticides on lawns and gardens.
The provincial government is expected to have its own regulation on pesticides by Spring, which would over take any municipal bans.
Twaddle adds they won’t know what specific pesticides are ban until the province sets regulations.
The provincial and local bylaw exempt golf courses and farms from the legislation.
