The President of the Lake Huron Fishing Club Ray Walser tells Bayshore Broadcasting news they don’t have enough people to run one at this point.
He says it takes at least 75 people to volunteer thousands of hours in total to make the derby successful.
Walser says recently, many have decided to stop after years of volunteering.
Walser says while they need to replace several roles in an official committee of twelve to fourteen people; specifically, they lack the key roles of Chair and Treasurer.
Walser says the Club has a meeting November 13th, and the Derby has a meeting November 18th.
He says after the 20th, they should be able to guage whether or not they will have enough people interested in saving the derby.
Walser says because the derby has four weigh stations along the shoreline, they need more volunteers than other successful derby’s where there is only one weigh station.
He says change is welcome, and perhaps scaling the number of stations down would be a plausable solution, ultimately, someone is still needed to implement any changes, to keep it alive.
If you are interested in volunteering, call The Lake Huron Fishing Club at (519)396-6760.
Walser and committee member Harold Cowan will be guests on Soundingboard on Tuesday, November 11th at 10am.
