Ten Restaurants in Grey Bruce are being awarded for the healthy options they bring to the table.
Restaurants in Owen Sound, Wiarton, Elmwood and Miller Lake are receiving an “Award of Excellence” from the province’s Eat Smart! program.
Eat Smart Project Coordinator, Samara Foisy says these local restaurants will join 650 other restaurants across Ontario.
In order to qualify, the restuarant must be inspected by the public health unit.
Inspectors ensure the restaurant provides a smoke free environment and demonstrates safe food handling procedures.
The menu must also offer guests healthier food choices that support Canada’s Guidelines to Healthy Eating.
Nathaniel’s, TJ’s Coffee Shop, Kelsey’s, East Side Mario’s Ginger Press Book Shop, Kincaids and Montana’s in Owen Sound were recognized for their healthier options.
The Wiarton Inn and Maple Ridge Family Campground in Miller Lake were honoured for their efforts.
Carolyn’s Kitchen in Elmwood also won — and owner Carolyn Coutt says she feels it is her responsibility for providing fresh, healthy food.
Coutt’s says she wanted to qualify for the Eat Smart! Program after her husband suffered from a heart attack and was diagnosed with Diabetes.
The Grey Bruce Health Unit is working with schools and workplaces to bring Eat Smart to local cafeterias.
Grey Bruce Medical Officer of Health, Doctor Hazel Lynn says the program helps consumers make better choices.
Lynn says fifty eight percent of Grey Bruce residents are overweight.
The Eat Smart Program was introduced in 1997 and works with thirty one of thirty six public health units in Ontario.
