If Canadians had a chance, they would vote Barack Obama into office by a five to one margin over John McCain.
So says a poll conducted by Reader’s Digest last summer and published in this month’s edition of the magazine.
Speaking on Sounding board, Senior editor Mary Aikin said Canadians had no qualms about Obama being the next President of the U. S.
Aikin said the poll was done in 50-countries where Reader’s Digest circulates and the results were generally the same.
Interestingly that same poll showed 19% of Canadian respondents were anti-American, placing the country 4th in that category, behind Indonesia, the Netherlands and Spain.
Aikin says every three of four Canadians asked would not move to the United States to live if they had the opportunity and that was one of the highest numbers registered of all countries.
Aikin says their survey also suggests that both Canada and the U. S. will have some negotiating to do on various issues affecting both countries.
She says Canadians picked the top three issues as environment, economy and global poverty in that order.
In the U. S. respondents picked the economy, terrorism and the war in Iraq as the top three issues–issues that Obama has promised to deal with should he be put in the White House.
