No one was injured in a field fire in Northern Bruce Peninsula over the weekend.
Northern Bruce Peninsula Fire Chief Jack Burt says shortly after 1 p.m. on Saturday, 14 firefighters responded to the blaze just off Highway 6 between Pike Bay Road and Sideroad 10 in a farmer’s field.
He says the fire was caused by a farmer burning old brown bales, which quickly spread covering between four and five acres of farm land before firefighters were able to suppress the fire.
Firefighters from both the Tobermory Fire Department and Lion’s Head Department were on the scene for about two hours.
“Having that many firefighters helped us to get back into the field and make sure we suppress the fire quickly before it spread to any neighbouring fields,” says Burt.
Burt says this has been deemed a no cost outdoor fire.
“Although the fire spread rapidly, there was no threat the structures or any persons in the area. The fire was in a spot where it was contained easily, but it does highlight the point that we do still have fairly dry conditions within the area and fires can spread very quickly,” says Burt.
Burt reminds residents all fires in the municipality require a permit, which can be acquired for free online here.
