EPCOR Utilities and the Ontario Power Authority have agreed to terminate a power purchasing agreement for EPCOR’s Kingsbridge-Two 160-megawatt project in Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh.
EPCOR spokesperson Neil Levine says the major reason for the termination is that the utility simply ran out of time.
Levine says the deal was signed in November 2005 with the stipulation that power be flowing by October 31st of this year.
Levine says despite EPCOR’s hard work in trying to make the project a reality by now, the agreement was the victim of circumstances beyond the utility’s control.
Levine says while the power purchasing agreement is dead, that doesn’t necessarily mean the end for the Kingsbridge-Two project itself.
He says EPCOR will continue to work closely with area landowners and the municipality as it figures out its next course of action.
Levine says the province has been largely responsible for holdups that have plagued Kingsbridge-Two so far.
Levine says there were delays in obtaining provincial and municipal approvals for the project and uncertainty surrounding provincial regulations on the the Kingsbridge-Two layout and design.
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh Council was kept waiting by Queen’s Park for many months, as it sought to enact a by-law governing minimum setback distances for homes and other buildings from wind turbines.
