Fifteen years spent as Huron Bruce Member of Parliament has come to an end for Paul Steckle.
Steckle was in Wingham last night to support Liberal Greg McClinchey.
Steckle says he enjoyed watching the man who had been his executive assistant for a number of years run a very successful campaign.
Looking back on his career, Steckle says he didn’t accomplish everything he wanted too, but was proud of a number of things that happened during his tenure.
One of which was his influence on the democratic deficit.
Steckle says when he entered Parliament in 1993 with a Liberal majority, there had never been more than 4 members who voted against party lines, something Steckle often did based on the beliefs of his constituents.
By the next federal election in 1997, 25 members were voting against major pieces of legislation.
Steckle feels he earned the trust of Huron Bruce constituents because he voted on their views – whether it was with party lines or against.
Steckle says he is not envious of the current government and stands by his decision to retire.
First on Steckle’s agenda is to spend time with his family at their hunting cabin in northern Ontario.
