A group of cyclists are taking to the road to promote awareness of mental illness.
The Third Annual “Ride Into Light” will leave Hanover at 10 AM and make it’s way to Owen Sound.
The group is made up of staff, volunteers of the Canadian Mental Health Association and other participants.
They are making the 60 kilometre journey to bring the topic of mental illness “into the light”.
Biking with the group is Rick Casey, whose daughter Kyla was afflicted with bipolar/schizo-affective disorder.
She died in 2001 of a pulmonary embolism.
Casey says it’s because of Kyla’s struggle that he chose to commit his time to biking eight thousand kilometres across Canada.
Now, following the cross-country ride, Casey rides in shorter, local events.
He says it’s no small task, but it pales in comparison with the challenges faced by people with mental illness.
The group of cyclists will arrive in Harrison Park in Owen Sound at about 2 this afternoon.
The “Ride into Light” is part of events taking place this week to mark Mental Illness Awareness Week at the Grey Bruce Branch of the Canadian Health Association
