A private members bill, from Bruce Grey Owen Sound MPP Bill Murdoch, is inching it’s way thru the Ontario Legislature.
The bill would give a tax deduction for anyone who wants to help out a disabled relative or friend by purchasing equipment or devices they can use.
Right now, there is a deduction for parents of a disabled child as long as the child lives a home.
Murdoch says the issue dates back over a year ago when he was approached by a constituent who wondered why there was no deduction for parents of an adult disabled child.
The independant MPP has introduced his bill in the House and it has passed 1st reading.
Bill Murdoch is confident it will pass second reading next month and then it would go to committee for review.
The local MPP says that is when it can be held up by the government and may never be passed, but he says sometimes the government will re-introduce the bill with minor changes making it a government sponsored bill.
Murdoch says that wouldn’t bother him as long as his proposal is passed.
The bill would allow people to deduct up to 4 thousand dollars when they buy assistive devices for disabled friends or relatives.
Bill Murdoch feels the plan will eventually be passed since a lot of MPP’s have told him it is a good idea.
