Despite a potential review, Wal-Mart will proceed with the construction of the Port Elgin store.
Saugeen Shores Council passed a pre-servicing agreement at a special meeting last night..
The agreement will see the clearing and grubbing of the land, topsoil stripping, and rough grading of the roads, lots, and temporary stormwater management facilities.
The agreement also sees any land not involved in the construction activity be returned to its original state once the pre-servicing is completed and prior to entering into a site plan agreement.
Shoreline Shopping Centres has also agreed to open a line of credit of 100 thousand dollars to Saugeen Shores to ensure there’s compliance to the agreement.
Deputy Mayor Doug Freiburger says the agreement will keep any wear and tear away from the roads.
He says the contractor’s gravel pit is located on the other side of the Saugeen Railtrail so there will be trucks going back and forth across the trail but the owner will remediate it once they are done with the pre-servicing.
Freiburger is aware that the appellants of the development — The Friends of Saugeen Shores — are requesting the Ontario Municipal Board to review its decision.
He says FOSS wants to make sure that the Town follows what the OMB agreed that the Town should be doing.
He says the Town has already taken those steps and will continue to see that remediation procedures are followed.
Freiburger was listening to the response on FOSS’ request for a review on Soundingboard and says it is quite evident that the residents don’t like what FOSS is doing.
He says it is within FOSS’ right to a review of the OMB decision but wonders when will this will end?
