Beef Producers in Grey Bruce being asked to take part in a nationwide survey on the impact the BSE crisis has the health of farmers.
A number of Researchers at the University of Ottawa and University of Calgary want about one thousand farmers from across the country to take part.
University of Calgary researcher Dr. Ryan Brook says while a lot has been said about the financial hardships farmers endured because of BSE, little is know about the long term emotional and social impact of the crisis.
He says this survey will be a good measure of the mental and physical health of beef farmers five years after the crisis devastated the Canadian beef industry.
Dr. Brook says the crisis saw many producers leave farming completly, some commit suicide and others toughed it out, only to be crushed by a mountain of debt.
He says by examing the results of the survey, they can understand what strategies farmers used to weather the storm.
Dr. Brook says eventually they will be able to develop programs and policies that will help promote the health of farm families.
He says they would like to see more cattle producers from Ontario and especially Grey Bruce get involved in the survey.
If anyone wants to take part in it, the number to call is 1 877-422-4358
