Two different boards of education in Bruce and Grey counties but in many ways alike.
The public and separate school systems are celebrating Education Week that continues until the end of the week.
(On Soundingboard yesterday Public system Director of Education Mary Ann Alton says highlighting the week is good, but it’s a bit of an oxymoron because to her and the educators, every week is Education Week.
Her counterpart in the separate system, Bruce MacPherson says the week provides a unique opportunity to celebrate the great work of Catholic schools, integrating Catholic teachings and gospel values across the curriculum.
Both directors agree that the week highlights teachers, administrators and education but that parents should be recognized as well.
Alton says character development, although addressed in the schools needs to be shown by the parents and the community as well.
She says the students need role models in this regard and that’s where parents and the communities at large need to step up to the plate.
MacPherson says he’s pleased with parent participation at his schools.
He says it’s all about home, school and parish.
