The Grey Bruce chapter of the Canadian Mental Health Association is glad there is a national resource for anyone who is experiencing a mental health crisis.
As of 9 a.m. Thursday, 9-8-8 went live across the country, giving everyone access to the Suicide Crisis Helpline in both English and French, 24/7 by phone or text.
Director of Client Services for CMHA Grey Bruce Scott McKay says that the Grey Bruce Mental Health Crisis Line will continue for the foreseeable future, but it’s a relief to see another option for those who urgently need to speak to someone.
The Mental Health Crisis Line is also available 24/7 at 1-877-470-5200.
“The local line is quite busy, and it’s delivered by another service provider that we contract out to, so not only are they receiving calls from Grey Bruce, but other regions as well. This will certainly help give people another option in terms of being able to access crisis support in a timely fashion.”
He says that the launch of 9-8-8 is a lifeline for people who require crisis services.
He adds that over the past three to four years, they’ve seen an increase in the number of people reaching out to those services.
“I do believe having a number that’s easy to remember for people who are in crisis, that people can turn to is a huge win for people experiencing mental health challenges.”
A similar service also exists in the United States with the same quick-dial number.
9-8-8 is funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada and ensures that those to access the service will be put in touch with a trained crisis responder.
