Mould has been discovered at the Port Elgin Plex.
Director of Engineering Services Dave Burnside delivered a report to Saugeen Shores Council last night to confirm that lab results showed presence of mould inside the arena and Rotary Hall.
Burnside says they believed mould was first detected in January during a Winterhawks hockey game.
He says many players discovered mould on the benches but staff didn’t know at the time that it was mould until they received the results.
Burnside says the building is safe since the mould is not airborne and is only contained within the surfaces.
He says there should be no concerns for people with breathing problems as long as the mould is not disturbed.
Signs are posted along the building warning visitors of mould inside.
Burnside says the Town is currently accepting tenders to do clean up work on the mould.
He says the work will include cleaning of the surfaces and steel structures then applying a fungicide to prevent potential mould growth.
Burnside says the overall cost won’t be determined until after this Thursday when they stop accepting tenders and will bring a proposal to a special Council meeting next Monday.
He says work will begin soon after that and hopes to have the work done by early June.
