A grassroots organization is looking to bring new nuclear build to the Bruce Nuclear Power Development.
The campaign got under way today (MON) at a news conference in Tiverton.
The local citizens’ group is being called Citizens for Bruce “C” and is made up of individuals from the business, labour, and community sectors.
The committee is led by three Co-Chairs: Doug Mullaly, President of the Bruce Power Pensioners Association; Doug Storey, Kincardine Businessman and a Director of the Kincardine and District Chamber of Commerce; and Dave Trumble, President of the Grey-Bruce Labour Council.
The campaign was launched at the Whitney Crawford Community Centre in Tiverton this morning to show the provincial government that Bruce site is the best location for a new build expansion in Ontario.
A number of dignitaries were in attendance to throw their support behind the campaign including Kincardine Mayor Larry Kraemer, Bruce County Warden Milt McIver, Huron Bruce Liberal MPP Carol Mitchell, and Bruce Power President and CEO Duncan Hawthorne.
The government is considering more nuclear build and Mullaly says they will likely make a decision on where it will be located later this year.
He says the committee wants to make a big impact fairly quickly.
Many are comparing this campaign to that of a decade ago when Bruce “A” was facing a permanent shutdown.
Trumble says back then they had full community support from top to bottom in saving the units.
He says they are hoping to bring that same enthusiasm to the Bruce “C” campaign.
Storey says both Kincardine and Bruce County were facing a difficult economic time when Bruce “A” was being shutdown.
He says the business community doesn’t want to see that again adding this is an opportunity to keep skilled workers in the area.
Citizens for Bruce “C” is handing out cards and will be placing media advertisements calling on the public to support their effort to bring a nuclear project to the Bruce.
The cards are currently being circulated to communities in Bruce County with a possibility of the campaign expanding into neighbouring counties.
