The unemployment rate for the region has gone down to 4.2 per cent.
The Four County Labour Market Planning Board says for the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region, the unemployment rate decreased by 0.3 per cent. This is compared to the province, which saw an increase of 0.1 per cent, now at 6.4 per cent.
The board says the region’s labour force size decreased from 164,300 in August, to 162,700 in September. The size of the population not participating in the labour force also increased by 2,000, bringing the participation rate down to 0.7 per cent, now at 59.6 per cent.
There were 600 full-time gains last month, but was offset with 1,400 part-time losses, resulting in a net loss of 900 in the region’s overall employment size.
The number of goods-producing sector employees increased by net 700. Forestry, fishing, mining, quarrying, oil and gas experienced the largest gain this month, however, with 500 employees. This was followed by utilities, and agriculture. Construction experienced the biggest loss, losing 900, and was followed by manufacturing.
Employment in the services-producing sector also decreased by net 1,700. This was accompanied by a loss of 900 employees in information, culture and recreation, leading to the biggest loss of September. This was followed by health care and social assistance and public administration. Business, building and other support services, however, experienced the greatest gain of 900 employees, followed by transportation and warehousing, and professional, scientific and technical services.
