Green Party Leader of Canada, Elizabeth May spoke to the more than 140 Bruce-Grey residents who attended last nights conference. Her “prescription for change” presentation touched on many subjects like the climate crisis, the democracy crisis in Canada, healthcare, community – based economics and the need for a change in Parliament. May says one of their challenges is to let people know they are more than a one policy party. May says the Green Party is even more than other political parties. May believes there is democracy crisis in Canada because of the low voter turnout in the last election. She says the current approach is turning people off of politics and she wants to get people turned back on. She says young people, especially, need to believe their vote counts. Both Bruce-Grey-Owen-Sound Green Party nominees, Michael Schmidt and Dick Hibma had a chance to speak and introduce themselves last night. May says both nominees would make great candidates for the next federal election, and that decision is up to grassroots democracy. Although Hibma is an employee of Bruce Nuclear Power, May says it shouldn’t cause conflicts. She says it is brave of him and Green Party policy’s work well for people whether their in the nuclear industry or not.
