It’s not just a Wal-Mart coming to Port Elgin; but a Wal-Mart Super Centre. That from the Manager of Communications for Wal-Mart Canada, Kevin Groh. Speaking on Sounding Board, Groh says unlike the stores in Hanover and Owen Sound, the Port Elgin store will also have an extensive grocery section on top of the usual departments found in traditional stores. Groh says with Wal-Mart located in Port Elgin, area residents will no longer have to travel out of the area to get the prices on products they are looking for. Groh says that is not to say those are not available in Saugeen Shores now; just that Wal-Mart will bring more selection and a broader range of goods. Groh says the build and development also means a great number of job opportunities. He says four to five hundred jobs will be created; 200 hundred related to the actual build of the store…the remainder filling the full and part time positions needed at the store. Site plans should with the town and Wal-Mart will be approved within the next few weeks, allowing for work to move ahead. Construction should start this summer, recruiting employees will take place in the fall, and the store should be open for business in the early part of 2009.
