The Town of Saugeen Shores is crediting commercial growth for its second-largest construction value on record.
Building Services provided a report to council Monday night saying the Town issued permits for construction projects totalling $129.1 million.
Staff say in a release, that’s above the five-year average value of $116.99 million
They note, the permit value was the second highest on record after 2021 at $154 million.
Staff say, while the number of new building permits for residential homes dipped to 111 houses, the total construction value remains strong due to increased commercial and institutional development.
They say the number of permits issued for Additional Residential Units (ARUs) increased from five in 2021 to 18 in 2022, which represents an increase in new housing options, something they say is a key component of Council’s affordable housing strategy.
Back in the summer of 2022, Council amended the Town’s housing policy to make it easier to build additional residential units. Those are self-contained residences with kitchen and bathroom facilities, on a property already containing a single-detached house, semi-detached house or townhouse.
Meanwhile, staff say in their report, the building division anticipates commercial growth will sustain high permit values as businesses move into the community or expand their operations to service the growing number of residents.
Staff highlighted the Goderich Street Commercial Centre, which is expected to include a Starbucks, Osmow’s and grocery store. Other builds and projects include the Staybridge addition to the Holiday Inn, and the renovation of 187-189 High Street in Southampton.
Mayor Luke Charbonneau says in a statement, “These numbers show the Town of Saugeen Shores continues to be a community of choice for people to live and work,” adding, “These projects provide homes and businesses to service our residents and our community’s growth supports important capital projects like our new Aquatic & Wellness Centre.”
