Efforts are underway to shrink the 100 mile diet down local back yards. Local urban agricultural enthusiast Kyle Stevenson wants people to get involved in the first Grey County Urban Agricultural Project. In other words, he wants as many people as possible to start a vegetable garden in their back yard this summer and enjoy growing and consuming their own locally produced food. Stevenson says there are many urgan agricultural projects underway across Canada and he wants to expand the movement to the Owen Sound Grey Bruce region. He says urban gardening helps promote self reliance and community participation. Stevenson hopes to sign up several hundred urban gardeners and at the end of the season everyone take part in a harvest festival where they share the fruits of their labour. He says setting up your own urban garden also raises awareness of the impotants of growing and consuming locally produced food. Anyone who wants to get involved in the urban agricultural project can contact Kyle at kyle_stevenson1986@hotmail.com.
