Canadian Nuclear Laboratories was able to give an update to Kincardine Council regarding the decommission of Douglas Point Nuclear Generating Station.
The Manager of Decommissioning, Joe Holstead, let council know that in 2023-2024, the team will continue with removing hazardous materials such as asbestos from the buildings on the site, and they hope to have the non-nuclear buildings fully dismantled by the end of next year.
As the project progresses, Holstead adds that they’re also continuing to continue activities that will bring them closer to removing the reactor peripheral equipment.
That includes crane refurbishments to facilitate the waste removals and future dismantling work.
He says that the reactor building and the used nuclear fuel bundles would be the last to be decommissioned.
CNL’s overall goal is to remove all waste from the site by 2070, at the latest.
He says he’s confident that the crew will have that deadline beat by several years.
Douglas Point was Canada’s first full-scale nuclear power plant. It operated from 1967-1984.
