The message was discouraging for Inverhuron residents.
Environmental planner with BM Ross Engineering Kelly Vader tells Kincardine councillors that the existing sewage and water infrastructure in Inverhuron is insufficient to service the current population.
Vader says the age and condition of existing services poses a potential health risk.
She says there is potential contamination because the wells are so close to the septic tanks and it could mean the effluent going down into the ground water and being taken out by the wells.
The Inverhuron Environmental Assessment Steering Committee has presented council with three options to correct the problem.
Committee member councillor Maureen Couture, the most expensive plan is a gravity sewer which calls for three pumping stations to be built.
The least expensive is an all-low pressure sewer that would need no pumping stations but all residents would need grinder pumps that does the job of the pumping station.
The grinder pumps, along with installation would cost about eight thousand dollars each.
There’s talk the pumps would be owned by the municipality which would also be responsible for its maintenance.
The third option is a hybrid combination of the first two sewer systems.
The issue will come up again at a public meeting on July 6th.
