The Grey Bruce Labour Council has presented its 15th annual Robert White Social Justice awards to three area high school students for their work in and out of school.
Robert White, former president of the Canadian Labour Congress and the Canadian Autoworkers Union, says the winners of the awards need to do more than just good work at school.
He says the perameters call for the recipients to achieve social justice change beyond the school environment in any way they can.
This year three awards were handed out on Monday.
18 year old Rachel Breen, a graduating student from OSCVI says she’s thrilled with the recognition and believes her humanitarian work during mission trips to Nicaragua may have swayed judges in her favour.
18 year old Alexandra Larson, a graduating student from Saugeen District Secondary School has been very active in school groups and is preparing to go to work building a school in Kenya this summer through the Me to We program.
17 year old Hannah Nicholls-Harrison from St. Marys High School is also graduating this year and she believes it’s her public speaking itinerary that has helped her win the award.
The three winners will share a one thousand dollar prize.
