Development charges could be on the rise in Saugeen Shores and the hike could be hefty.
Councillors received a report from Hemson Consulting representative Craig Binning, giving the Cadillac version of how high development charges to builders could go legally.
Currently the charge could be 85 hundred dollars per single and semi housing units but the town chose to charge just over 4,200 hundred dollars.
The report says the calculated charge now could be as high $14,400 or a 71 per cent increase.
There would be a 19 percent increase in non-residential rates in square footage charges.
Deputy Mayor Luke Charbonneau, who chaired the meeting for the absent Mayor Mike Smith, says the numbers are just suggestions.
Charbonneau says when a similar study was done in 2007, council of the day chose not to charge the maximum amount to developers.
Council has agreed to hold a public meeting on the issue on Monday July 11th for public input.
The principle behind development charges is that “growth pays for growth” so that the financial burder of servicing new development is not borne by existing taxpayers.
