A walk is taking place at Saugeen First Nation today at 8 AM.
Saugeen First Nation says it wants to pay honour and respect to our lifegivers: water and women.
The local band says the Water Walk recognizes the importance of water in sustaining life and draws attention to the deteriorating health of our waters.
But they’re also hoping to bring awareness to the on-going struggle of Women Against Violence.
The Water Walk in Saugeen Shores is also giving support to a larger, national walk at Turtle Island.
The Anishnabek Women’s Water Commission began its awareness walk around the Great Lakes in 2003.
Over the past month, walkers started from four different points and will meet in Bad River, Wisconsin by June 12th.
The local walk will begin with opening ceremonies at the Health Centre at the corner of Mason Drive and Kewageshig Street at 8 AM.
The walk will follow Highway 21 to Scotch Settlement Road then on toward South Sauble Beach where a water ceremony will be conducted.
Everyone is invited to the walk, and a community BBQ will follow.
