The Bridges Out of Poverty organization is urging Hanover Council to do what it can to promote affordable housing.
The group says poverty is a growing concern in Hanover and affordable housing is the best way to tackle the issue.
Spokesperson Brittany Brenndorfer recently offered a Getting Ahead In A Just Getting By World program to almost a dozen Hanover residents living at the poverty level.
She says affordable housing was the number one concern among participants.
The Getting Ahead program is an 8 week workshop and a joint initiative of Grey County Social Services and the Adult Learning Centres.
Mayor Kathi Maskell agrees more must be done to assist Hanover’s poor.
She says there is already a group in place that is studying the homeless and housing issue in Hanover — and another meeting will be held soon.
Brenndorfer notes there are also a lot of predators that prey on the poor.
These include fast cash businesses and pawn shops that offer short term help that ends up keeping people in poverty longer.
