As diversity month comes to a conclusion, there will be another celebration today in Owen Sound.
Owen Sound’s Pride Picnic will take place at Harrison Park — and a special book will be launched at the event.
Joan Beecroft is the woman who put together the book “Growing Up Gay in Bruce and Grey.”
She says the idea came after holding a panel discussion last fall at the Downtown Bookstore.
Beecroft says she was encouraged to compile the stories shared into a book that everyone could read.
She says the stories all have the common theme of survival.
Beecroft says no matter what generation people grew up in, many shared similar experiences of bullying, misunderstanding, and intolerance from friends, family, the church or their communities.
Beecroft says this book isn’t just for the gay community — she hopes everyone will read it and that it can become a part of the curriculum in our schools.
The book will be launched with a barbecue lunch at the picnic at 4 PM at Harrison Park.
Beecroft says everyone is welcome.
