Owen Sound Public Library just named the winner for the position of Owen Sound Poet Laureate for the next two year term.
It’s a position that was created in 2007.
After receiving a number of nominations the selection committee chose Kateri Akiwenzi – Damm to fill that role for our community.
Chief Librarian Cindy Weir says the Poet Laureate will create new poems and and perform them to audiences in Owen Sound and Area, and act as an ambassador of the literary arts in the community.
The Library received 10 applications for the position.
Cindy Weir says the Selection Committee unanimously selected Kateri Akiwenzi to fill the position for the next two years.
Kateri says she expects to be very busy as Owen Sounds Poet Laureate, promoting, writing, performing and teaching.
Weir says there are certain criteria one has to meet to be nominated, they need to be local, published, respected in the literary arts community, and a member of the library.
Kateri says she has been very involved in teaching from the University Level down to workshops for local poets in communities here and elsewhere.
