South Bruce Peninsula is calling on the senior levels of government to help pay for the costs of policing in the community.
Mayor John Close says OPP service is costing the municipality close to 2-million-dollars a year, but the municipality has no say in how those costs are determined.
Close says the province negotiates contracts with the OPP and then the costs are downloaded onto the municipality.
He says they don’t mind paying the freight but would like to have some say in what the costs should be.
Mayor Close is quick to point out that there are no dissatisfied with the policing services they receive.
He says police have done a great job keeping their municipality a safe one.
The crunch is the arbitrary costs that become the responsibility of the municipality after those costs have been negotiated by the province.
