Brockton wants less red tape and more action when it comes to source water protection.
Brockton Councillor Chris Peabody is against a proposal from the regional Source Water Protection Committee to hire a Risk Management Official.
He says a Risk Management Official will only create more bureaucracy and higher costs for member municipalities.
Instead Peabody would much rather see that money go into the pockets of farmers to allow them to enhance their environmental programs on the farm.
Peabody, who has years of experience on Brockton’s Well Head Protection Plan — says providing cash to farmers make the best sense.
He says the farmers need the money to implement programs to ensure their farming practices won’t negatively impact source water.
Peabody says the burden should fall on those who use and drink the water rather than the farmers to pay for these programs.
He says to hire a Risk Management Official will only mean more red tape and rules.
Peabody says during these tough economic times, it would be unwise to spend money on another bureaucrat.
The Source Water Protection Committees proposal to hire a Risk Management Official wouldn’t take effect for another year or so.
The Source Water Protection Committee represents all the municipal councils within the Saugeen, Grey Sauble and North Bruce Peninsula region.
