The Hanover Fire Department has a new tool — a sprinkler powder that fights fires more effectively.
This small hand held device when deployed releases a large cloud of potassium compounds into the structure where the fire has occurred.
The powder quickly interrupts the chemical reaction of fire without removing oxygen in the structure.
It is able to extinguish some flames, giving fire crews valuable time to set up and go into the building to extinguish the remaining flames with minimal water use.
Hanover Fire Chief Ken Roseborough admits he was skeptical at first, but after seeing the technology in action, he is convinced it works.
A demonstration of the device took place in West Grey recently when an abandoned farm home was set on fire for training purposes.
Roseborough says the new technology will not only save lives but also reduce loss due to fire and protect firefighters.
He adds it’s completely harmless to humans, pets and the environment.
This same technology was used on a recent Saugeen Shores house fire and is credited for saving an additional 250 thousand dollars in damages.
It also helped control a fire at the Meaford Golf and Country Club in early April.
Two free units were provided to every Fire Department in Grey and Bruce Counties by AFG Flame Guard.
Each unit costs about 12 hundred dollars.
