Political attention in Huron-Bruce has been diverted for a day from the federal election campaign to the provincial level.
Premier Dalton McGuinty talked up the new risk management program for grain and oilseed farmers during a visit to Hensall on Wednesday.
The Premier used a tour of the Hensall District Co-operative as the backdrop to promote the risk management program unveiled in the recent provincial budget.
Appearing with Huron-Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell, McGuinty told reporters his government will bring in similar initiatives for the red meat and pork sectors.
McGuinty also promises a self-directed risk-management program for fruit and vegetable producers.
The Premier points to the initiative as an important tool in helping to save the family farm.
He says the last such advance toward rural sustainability in Ontario took place in the early 1980’s.
The Premier also issued a challenge to the three major federal party leaders.
He’s calling on them to work with the provinces toward a shared risk-management solution for cash-strapped farmers.
