A prominent downtown Port Elgin business person is retiring after 34 years in the financial business.
Erin Zorzi, manager of the Meridian Credit Union says she and her husband Paul have been planning the retirement for the past year and a half and she only announced her intention to the company on March 1st.
Her career ends on Friday, April 29th.
Coincidentally, as Zorzi gets set to retire, Meridian Credit Union has announced the intention to merge with Desjardins Credit Union.
Zorzi says her retirement announcement and the merger announcement were coincidental and is not the reason for her departure.
As a matter of fact, Zorzi says she thinks the merger will be great for both institutions and for their members.
Should the merger be approved by members, there would be 60 outlets of the new company with 8-billion-dollars in assets belonging to over 260 thousand members.
Meridian members have already voted.
The regular membership voted 96 per cent in favour of the move while Class A shareholders voted 97 per cent in favour.
Desjardin Credit Union members vote on April 27th.
Zorzi says the merger will not result in lost jobs and Meridian will maintain its name in Port Elgin.
Meanwhile, Zorzi says retirement does not mean she will give up her volunteerism which she believes is an important part of anybody’s life.
She says she will continue the work she is doing on behalf of the Port Elgin Rotary club and as a member of the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation.
Zorzi has been recognized many times over the years for her volunteer work in the community, along with her professional work at Meridian Credit Union.
