With the defeat of the Kincardine 2011 budget recently, it’s left some departments scrambling to conduct regular business this far into the year.
The policy chair for Kincardine recreation services, Councillor Ken Craig reported to council they were in that situation.
As a rule Recreation Director Karen Kieffer would be hiring students for summer work but with no budget, hiring was put on hold.
Craig asked council to approve a pre-budget request for 247 thousand dollars for the summer programs and just over 40 students who will fill positions in parks and horticulture, playgrounds and tourism.
He said without moving now, students may start looking for other work and not be available to the municipality.
Craig says normally the university and college students start work at the beginning of May and the high school students in mid-to-late-June.
Council agreed with the request.
Meanwhile, a new municipal budget meeting for Kincardine is set for Monday, May 9th at 5 PM.
